Do I have to mount them flush to the backwall with these brackets or can they just be screwed to the sides of the cabinet?

If you need to install it flush with the rear wall: You must use the rear support bracket.
If you need to install it against the side of the cabinet: The rear support bracket is not needed; simply remove it before installation.
